 Biography

Gustavo Romero, an internationally acclaimed pianist and Steinway Artist who won his first piano competition at age 10, acknowledged for his technical brilliance, he continues to thrill discerning audiences from Capetown to Carnegie Hall. Pianist Gustavo Romero has a stellar reputation for both the technical brilliance and interpretive depth of his playing, and for his commitment to in-depth exploration of individual composers, as demonstrated by series focusing on the works of Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Critics have praised his interpretive mastery of piano literature. Mr. Romero's numerous prizes over the years include the First Prize in the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in 1989.

In 1999, Mr. Romero's traversal of Chopin's complete solo piano works in six sold-out concerts at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla , California , celebrated both the Library's 100th Anniversary and the 150th Anniversary of Chopin's death. These performances received numerous critical accolades, including the Los Angeles Times, which stated, "Romero showed an easy musicality, solid technical resources, a joy in illuminating miniatures and an unfeigned authority in this music -- in short, strong rapport with the poetic and lyric elements in the composer's art." The series was also recorded for national broadcast on National Public Radio's Performance Today. Mr. Romero has just completed all Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas in March 2010 which covered 64 solo recitals in 5 different countries including Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong Thailand and South Africa.

Mr. Romero has performed as piano soloist with other renowned orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Atlanta, Houston, Boston Pops, Austin, Pittsburgh, Honolulu, and New World Symphonies, English Chamber Orchestra, Radio France Orchestra, Philharmonia Hungarica, New Japan Philharmonic,Shanghai Orchestra, Cape Town Philharmonic, and the Liege Philharmonic, with which he appeared in a concert internationally broadcast from the United Nations Headquarters. He has also appeared at major festivals, including New York's Mostly Mozart Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Eastern Music Festival, and the Montreux Festival in Switzerland . In addition, Mr. Romero has appeared in over 20 countries, performing in Paris , Zurich , Milan , Berlin , Prague , and Johannesburg .

Among Mr. Romero's numerous prizes over the years was the 1983 Avery Fisher Young Artists Career Grant. In 2004, he received the Dallas Morning Herald’s award for the Best Solo or Chamber Performance in Dallas , performing with Chamber Music International. After five years as Assistant Professor at The University of Illinois/Champaign, Mr. Romero is now Associate Professor of Piano at the University of North Texas . He is a graduate of the Juilliard School , studying with Herbert Stessin. Gustavo Romero maintains residences in New York City and Dallas , Texas
