เพื่อเป็นการรำลึกถึง อ.ปิยะพันธ์ สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา ศิลปินแห่งชาติและเป็นอาจารย์อาวุโส ที่สร้างประโยชน์อย่างมากมายต่อวงการดนตรีคลาสสิค และ
-รายได้จากการแสดงคอนเสิร์ตฯ สบทบทุน จัดตั้งห้องสมุด กำธร สนิทวงศ์ฯ และ
ปิยะพันธ์ สนิทวงศ์ฯ ณ หอสมุดดนตรีพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งกำลัง ก่อสร้างอาคารใหม่อยู่ขณะนี้

On the theme "ensemble", or playing together, they will largely perform in duos _ two musicians on two pianos, or quartets _ four musicians on two pianos.

Altogether, there will be 17 teams _ about 50 people in total _ taking turns to play at the main auditorium of the Thailand Cultural Centre on November 28, at 7pm. Performers will include pianists who are the contemporaries of Ajarn Piyabhand, who died at 72 years of age in 2006, and piano teachers who called him "Ajarn Poo" or "Grandfather Teacher" when they studied under him, as well as others who hold him in high regard through what they have heard about him.

Ajarn Piyabhand grew up in a household humming with classical music performed by great musical masters and captured on long-playing records. His first piano lessons, at 9 years of age, were with his aunt, the late ML Puangroy Abhaiwongse, also a national artist. When he decided to take up the piano seriously, Ajarn Piyabhand spent five years in Britain (1949 to 1954) and took lessons with the late Claudio Arrau, Joseph Cooper and Louis Kentner. In 1956, he won second prize at the Scottish International Piano Competition, the precursor of today's Leeds International Piano Competition, being the first Thai to go so far. This led to concerts in Britain, France, Denmark, Eastern Europe and the US.

After returning to Thailand, Ajarn Piyabhand served at the Royal Thai Navy's Music Department for 13 years before settling down to teach piano privately. A complete musician, he performed, taught, composed, and arranged other people's musical works. Lt Cmd Piyabhand was named national artist in 1998.

Ajarn Piyabhand was also a keen photographer who loved to explore Africa.

For the upcoming memorial concert, pupils and friends will play works arranged for four or eight hands from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of them will also play arrangements of songs that are familiar to Thai listeners in particular.

Proceeds from the concert event will go to a Music Library Project in dedication to Ajarn Piyabhand Sanitwongse. Admission is by 500 baht donation.
